Donna K. McGee
Artist statement:
I try to impart a meditative yet an exciting quality with my painting. I invite the viewer to let their eyes travel over the entire canvas, to be involved and to draw their own inspiration. Viewer reactions become part of my own muse. As I paint I do not start out with a clear vision, but I deliberate with each stroke and color. The surfaces’ initial calm betrays the possibility of implosion; that these facades will give way to the unknown beneath. I manipulate the acrylic paint to create simultaneous illusions of flatness and experience: colors grow into each other; planes are inscribed with abrasions and fissures. The paint evokes the surfaces marled by the passage of time.
The final product evolves until I think it is finished. Only then is it adorned with a title. It is my hope, that my paintings will evoke the viewer’s own memories and visions and she or he will apply their own titles and be able to say, “I’ve been here before.”
