The Foundry Gallery’s August show features work by some of the Washington area’s most talented artists. The juried exhibit is deliberately eclectic and that is its excitement. The delicate, traditional Gongbi watercolor of Chinese-born painter Ping Shen faces the witty, unsettling surrealism of Martin Swift.
The painterly draftsmanship of Kristin Enck and psychological penetration of Suzanne Vigil contrast with the work of experimentalists like Aaron Shifflet and abstract painters Colleen Clapp and Georgia Nassikas (whose painting in this show, she says, is a deconstruction of the bee hives outside her window). And two of Alex Tolstoy’s beautifully sensitive watercolors share comradely space with Gayle Berens’ dog.
The show is a bit of cool in the hot Washington summer.
