December 2015 – Some Women by Jay Peterzell
Exhibit Dates: Wed., December 2, 2015 – Sun., January 3, 2016
Closing Reception: Sat., January 3, 4-7pm
Peterzell came back from a long trip to Italy this year intent on painting in a way that’s modern but captures the psychological density and classical sources of Renaissance art. This series of paintings and drawings is his second solo exhibit in Washington.
Themes are developed from one work to another. A tribute to Rubens’ mythological fantasy done in crayola becomes the basis for a large, provocative painting of the rape. A mountain hike above the cave of the Magdalene inspires the exuberant Wind Nun. Works on biblical themes culminate in a picture of the “most blessed” woman of the old testament killing a Canaanite general. We see Macbeth’s witches, the Sibyl, Clytemnestra. A woman with red hair appears and reappears.
The exhibit ends with several portraits, not of women but musicians, who are almost as complicated.
