November 2016 – Heather Jacks & Natacha Thys
November 2 – 27, 2016
Opening reception: Saturday, November 5, 5 – 8 pm
Color, Texture, Vision
Heather Jacks’ new paintings sometime create space of such depth and chromatic intensity the eye has a hard time stabilizing it; others present a scarred, abraded surface that the viewer wants to touch. Painting is meditative and cathartic for Jacks. She is inspired by patinas that gradually form with age, by the changes in color, texture and structure of all things over time. This sense of accumulated change is reflected in an accretion of oil paint, cold wax, powdered pigment and pastels that is worked and gouged with tools on a hard panel. Jacks is also a fine-art photographer whose work is in many private collections and has been widely published.
Natacha Thys is a Haitian-American lawyer-turned-artist. After practicing human rights law for many years, she began painting in 2011 after a dream seeing her grandmother and flashes of color. She believes her grandmother and other ancestors provide a living presence in her paintings, adding vision and meaning to that of the viewer. She views her work as inherently spiritual and believes spiritual transformation is key to creating a better world. Her work is abstract, though it often alludes to landscapes, particularly the Caribbean land and sea. Her style suggests an intense shimmer of light over the landscape, a reinterpretation of color field abstraction and impressionism.
