September 2016 – Katherine Blakeslee: Land and Sea
August 31 – October 2, 2016
Opening reception: September 10, 5-8 PM
Katherine Blakeslee’s watercolors reflect her fascination with the sea and the land and that sometimes invisible, but ever magical line between sky and land and sea. Growing up in Maryland inspired her love of the ways in which water, land and sky interact, sometimes playfully and sometimes not. Many of her paintings are suffused with different shades of blue. The beauty of nature is how it is continually transformed and reshaped by light and weather. Watercolor captures these mysteries beautifully. The challenge of the medium, which is both delicate and powerful, is that the artist shares creativity with the water and the pigment with none in complete control. The resulting image, like those in nature, is greater than the sum of its parts.
