Cristy West is a fervent believer in the power of the arts, in all their forms, to reveal and celebrate what it means to be human. She resides in Washington DC and spends the summer months on an island in Maine. Her formal art training has taken place at the Art League School, in Alexandria, Va., and at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. In addition to her work as a visual artist, she has been a storyteller and creative arts therapist and has also published short stories and taught creative writing.. Her paintings appear frequently in the monthly juried shows at the Art League Gallery, in Alexandria, and also in Vinalhaven, Maine, at the New Era Gallery. In December 2018 she became a member of the Foundry Gallery, DC.
My paintings emerge from the process of working—layers and more layers, line and color and texture. scribbles and collage and paint, adding and erasing, immersing myself in a state of flux. Each painting becomes an expression of feelings, mysteries and things unseen. My hope is that they will hint at complexities lurking beneath the surface, tensions held in balance, melodies whispered at the edge of consciousness.
