Now Accepting Submissions for Artists Seeking Membership

Foundry Gallery, Washington, DC’s oldest non-profit artists’ cooperative, holds monthly solo and members shows at its beautiful, industrial-style space on 8th Street, NW, near V Street in the bustling revitalized North End Shaw neighborhood. Foundry is a lively community where artists consistently show and develop their work. And it offers Washington area residents and visitors a gallery with high quality, affordable, original art.

Members are involved in the operation of the gallery and are eligible to hold executive positions. Each member participates on a committee, and shares the rights and responsibilities of running the gallery.

The gallery employs a director to assist the gallery and its artists with marketing and promotion efforts as well as facilitate collector relationships and art sales.

Among the benefits of membership are:

  • Coordinated press and publicity for gallery exhibits

  • Solo shows regularly reviewed in the media

  • Internet presence — each artist has a page of images on the gallery website with a link to his/her personal website

  • Unframed work in bins

  • Artist profiles promoted to via gallery’s social media and email list

  • Group drawing sessions with a model, artist’s talks, seminars and other events

  • 70% of sales retained by the artist/ 30% to the gallery

The following membership categories are available. All categories require that the artwork be juried and accepted by the current members.

Full Member — Dues $200/month

  • Solo show once every 16-24 months

  • Work in monthly members shows (except during solo month)

  • Artist info and images on website

  • Responsible for attending at least 4 meetings a year and serving on a committee or in a volunteer position for a specific task

  • Up to 8 pieces in bin

  • Votes on gallery decisions

  • Minimum two years commitment

Associate Member — Dues $165/month

  • Work in monthly members shows

  • Artist info and images on website

  • Responsible for attending at least 4 meetings a year and serving on a committee or in a volunteer position for a specific task

  • Up to 8 pieces in bin

  • Votes on gallery decisions

  • Minimum one year commitment

A small number of shared memberships may be available.
Shared Membership— Full or Associate Dues

  • Two artists share one membership

  • Together they share the responsibilities and benefits of that category

Helena Foundation: YFA Grant (call is closed)

The Young Foundry Artists Grant provides local emerging artists the opportunity to showcase their artwork and learn how a co-operative gallery functions. The grant provides recipients with a one year Foundry Gallery membership and concludes with a solo exhibit.

Through the Helena Foundation, Jim and Sylvia Earl's philanthropy expresses their passion for both science and the arts. The Earls say, "you must find something to support that you are passionate about, make a personal connection and then 'give, give, give.' It will make you feel good."

Application Process for Full/ Associate/ Shared Memberships: Prospective member artists may apply by sending five or more images, an artist’s statement, and a resume or letter to the Membership Chair. Artists whose work appears promising will be invited to bring four or five pieces to a meeting of the members. Applicants are juried in to Foundry Gallery by a two-thirds vote of members.
