BIO

Nolan is a DMV-area artist based in Arlington, Virginia, whose work transforms reclaimed denim into abstract paintings and installations. Working with jeans as both material and memory, Nolan cuts, bleaches, washes, pieces, and paints denim to reveal traces of wear shaped by years of use. In Nolan’s work, denim is both material and collaborator. The fraying, textures, and structural qualities of the fabric guide each composition, allowing the histories embedded in the cloth to emerge within the finished piece.

His work has been shown in regional galleries, juried exhibitions, and installations, including The Art League, DC Arts Center, Del Ray Artisans, Falls Church Arts, LOOK Arlington, and Touchstone Gallery.

Nolan also maintains The Denim Stories Project, an ongoing archive complementing the studio practice by collecting personal reflections about the jeans people have worn throughout their lives.

Statement

I create material-led abstract paintings using denim harvested from jeans. Jeans are ubiquitous, democratic garments, but also deeply personal. Worn close to the body, they absorb movement, labor, memory, and everyday life. Over time, their fading, fraying, stains, and softened fibers become evidence of lives lived.

My process begins with the stories already worn into the material. Through bleaching, cutting, washing, piecing, and painting, I excavate those stories. I collaborate with the material, letting what is already present guide what comes next. I piece together fragments of worn denim, allowing separate histories to gather into new abstract surfaces. The work lives at the boundary where a familiar garment becomes painting.

Jeans are our biographers. Individually, they hold intimate records of prior wearers; collectively, they form a cultural record of ordinary life. Often, the work is encountered first as abstraction; with closer looking, the denim reveals itself. When viewers recognize a material they themselves wear, that recognition connects the lives once held in the denim with the lives of those now viewing the work, each shaped by their own perspective and experience, possibly wearing jeans themselves.
